
The project, known as the GigaBattery, is a key component of Leag’s broader GigawattFactory initiative. This regional-industrial program focuses on the development of renewable energy generation, large-scale energy storage, and green hydrogen infrastructure in Germany’s Lausitz region. The initiative aims to transform former coal-mining sites into a hub for clean energy production, supporting the country’s energy transition and promoting industrial revitalization in the area.
The GigaBattery system will enhance grid stability and enable the integration of higher shares of renewable energy into Germany’s electricity system. By storing excess solar and wind energy and releasing it during peak demand periods, the facility will contribute to balancing supply and demand while supporting sustainable power generation. The project’s size and design are expected to set new benchmarks for grid-scale storage development across Europe.
Leag’s GigawattFactory initiative also reflects the company’s strategy to shift from conventional coal-based power generation toward renewable energy solutions. In 2022, Leag announced plans to develop 7 GW of solar and wind capacity by 2030, marking a significant step toward establishing one of Europe’s largest renewable energy hubs. The company’s ongoing efforts in Jänschwalde demonstrate its commitment to energy diversification, local economic development, and the efficient reuse of post-mining land.
The collaboration between Leag and Fluence Energy builds on the technological expertise of both companies. Fluence Energy is recognized for its advanced battery storage systems and digital energy management platforms, which are widely used to optimize grid operations. The combination of Leag’s local energy infrastructure and Fluence’s technological capabilities is expected to accelerate the deployment of high-capacity energy storage solutions in Germany.
Once completed, the GigaBattery will serve as a cornerstone of the Lausitz energy transformation, providing a model for similar projects across Europe. It will enable the flexible integration of renewable sources into the power grid while strengthening Germany’s long-term energy security. The initiative highlights how industrial partnerships and innovation can drive sustainable energy development and regional economic growth through the repurposing of traditional energy sites for future-oriented applications.
