Tailings storage facility at Fosterville
The project is expected to sustain over 1,000 jobs and contribute approximately A$1.3 billion to the regional economy over the next decade. Fosterville currently employs more than 650 full-time staff and 200 contractors, most residing locally, making it a critical component of Bendigo’s economic base. Premier Allan said: “Fosterville’s success is putting Victoria on the global mining map – showcasing our world-class resources, attracting international investment, and creating good local jobs for our regional communities.”
The new tailings facility will enhance the mine’s processing capacity and improve management of waste rock storage. The approval followed an environmental effects statement assessment, which concluded that potential environmental impacts could be effectively managed through appropriate safeguards. Minister D’Ambrosio highlighted that the approval helps Victoria build on its long-standing gold mining legacy, stating: “This approval ensures Fosterville continues to build on that.”
Member for Bendigo West, Maree Edwards, emphasized the project’s significance for the local workforce: “It secures the future of Fosterville and the livelihoods of hundreds of regional workers in Bendigo.” The mine’s expansion reinforces Bendigo’s economic stability, supporting both direct employment and associated industries in the region.
Gold mining has been a foundational contributor to Victoria’s economy for over 170 years. Despite the state increasingly focusing on critical minerals and rare earths, gold continues to drive investment and job creation in regional communities. The Fosterville project reflects the ongoing strength of Victoria’s gold sector, combining high-grade production with modern operational and environmental management practices.
By enabling sustainable expansion at Fosterville, the new TSF5 facility positions the mine to maintain its global competitiveness while supporting local employment and investment. The project highlights the balance between economic development and responsible environmental management, ensuring Victoria’s gold mining industry remains a key pillar of the state’s economy well into the next decade.
Overall, the Fosterville sustained operations project represents a strategic step in securing long-term regional prosperity, maintaining Victoria’s gold production leadership, and reinforcing Bendigo’s position as a hub for world-class mining activities.
