The new facility at BASF Coatings’ Muenster site is designed to produce high-runner products.
This investment represents a key strategic milestone for BASF Coatings, strengthening its long-term competitiveness in the high-volume coatings market. The new facility incorporates advanced automation technology that enhances operational sustainability while improving process reliability and precision.
The project is among the most significant investments made by BASF Coatings in the past five years. From initial conceptual studies in 2019 through two and a half years of construction to the start of regular production, the development process reflected the expertise and collaboration of BASF Coatings’ global teams.
Uta Holzenkamp, President of BASF Coatings, said: “Our innovative strength and continuous drive for improvement make us a successful industry player – and more importantly, a valued partner to our customers. This project is an outstanding team achievement, coordinated and executed by a global network of experts across multiple BASF locations.”
Nils Lessmann, Senior Vice President of Global Operations Paint & Resin, added: “We have invested in a more advanced process with the new facility, which ensures high and consistent product quality and stability. In this way, our customers benefit from our expertise, knowledge, and experience. As the next step, our teams in Asia Pacific and North America will adopt these best practices and strengthen our global manufacturing network.”
The Muenster plant is equipped to optimize energy use and minimize environmental impact. Through its design, the facility helps reduce CO? emissions and supports BASF Coatings’ sustainability goals. Since 2022, the Muenster site has been operating entirely on renewable wind energy, resulting in an annual reduction of approximately 4,000 tonnes of CO? emissions.
This initiative aligns with BASF Coatings’ broader commitment to sustainability across its global operations. The company has established a network of production sites in Europe, Asia Pacific, and North America that now run on 100% renewable electricity.
With the commissioning of the new Muenster facility, BASF Coatings enhances its global production capacity and reinforces its focus on technological innovation, operational excellence, and environmental responsibility. The plant not only supports growing customer demand for automotive coatings but also exemplifies BASF Coatings’ ongoing efforts to combine high-quality manufacturing with sustainable industrial practices.
