The 15-year contract will enable Urenco to support EDF’s nuclear fleet into the 2040s.
Urenco CEO Boris Schucht said: “This deal represents an enormous step forward for energy security in Europe at a time when it has never been so important in the geopolitical landscape. I am grateful to our long-term partner EDF for once again placing their trust in Urenco.” His remarks highlighted the significance of stable nuclear fuel services for long-term energy planning. The agreement also reflects the ongoing partnership between the two companies across multiple projects.
Urenco is a member of the Sizewell C Consortium, which is advancing a new nuclear power station in the UK. The project is led jointly by EDF and the UK Government, and EDF holds a 12.5% stake in it. Urenco’s role includes contributing to the project’s broader development goals and supporting domestic nuclear capacity. In addition, Urenco works with EDF on the recycling of used nuclear fuel by providing enrichment services for recovered uranium, enhancing resource efficiency in the fuel cycle.
EDF Business Solutions supplies Urenco’s UK facility with electricity through a low-carbon contract, supporting Urenco’s sustainability objectives. This arrangement aligns with both companies’ efforts to reduce emissions within the energy industry. The two sides have also cooperated on research and development initiatives. One notable example is the HyDUS project (Hydrogen in Depleted Uranium Storage), which focuses on creating a hydrogen storage technology that uses depleted uranium, a byproduct of Urenco’s enrichment process. The project aims to explore potential applications of hydrogen as part of future low-carbon energy systems.
Urenco’s ownership structure includes one-third ownership by the UK Government, one-third by the Dutch Government and one-third shared by the German utilities E.ON and RWE. The company plays a prominent role in the global uranium enrichment market and operates several facilities in Europe and the United States. EDF is fully owned by the French Government and manages multiple nuclear power stations in the UK. It is also leading the construction of the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant and the development of the Sizewell C project.
The latest agreement strengthens the long-standing partnership between Urenco and EDF at a time when reliable nuclear fuel services are considered important for ensuring stable electricity supply. The cooperation across commercial contracts, research work and major nuclear construction projects demonstrates continued engagement between the companies within Europe’s nuclear energy sector.
