River at Sintiki and Kerkini mountains, Greece

 The Municipality of Sintiki municipality in the Serres regional unit, Central Macedonia, Greece is taking the necessary steps to exploit the rich geothermal field within its geographical boundaries.

In October 2023, the Hellenic Geological & Mining Research Authority (EAGME) completed measurements in borehole 17 located above Charopos and found water at 80 degrees Celsius with a flow rate of approximately 150 cubic meters per hour. We previously reported on early work in the region.

Its exploitation, as well as the exploitation of the remaining geothermal fluid, is underway with the signing of a memorandum of cooperation between the Municipality of Sintiki and EAGME, which provides for:

Cooperation in the development, rational – sustainable utilization and monitoring of the leased part of the geothermal field of local interest (low temperature) of Sidirokastro.

Cooperation in the exploitation of the hot thermal waters of the Sidirokastro Baths for the development of thermal tourism.

Cooperation in possible geothermal research activities of EAGME in individual areas and points of the Municipality of Sintiki.

Cooperation in the investigation of the hydrogeological conditions of the wider Sidirokastro area for the possibility of installing Geothermal Heat Pump systems, for heating and/or cooling spaces, through the exploitation of the heat of cold waters with a temperature of < 30 o C, surface and underground, which are not characterized as geothermal potential.

Provision of scientific information and knowledge on geothermal issues, both in general and specifically for the Sidirokastro geothermal field and the wider area of ??the Municipality of Sintiki.

Joint formation of Working Groups consisting of expert scientists from other Research Institutes and/or Higher Education Institutions to optimally address specific scientific and technical issues.

This collaboration is the beginning of the exploitation of the geothermal field and the attraction of investments in the region.
