The sale included 19 parcels covering 32,527 acres in Beaver and Millard counties. Every parcel attracted bids, showing strong interest from industry participants. Beaver County led with nearly $5.2 million in bids for just under 21,000 acres, with per-acre bids ranging from $10 to $401, reflecting robust demand for the region’s geothermal resources.
Gregory Sheehan, BLM Utah State Director, said: “This geothermal lease sale underscores the BLM’s commitment to responsibly developing renewable energy sources on public lands. Geothermal energy is key to our clean energy future, and this sale demonstrates that Utah remains an attractive destination for investment in low-emission baseload power.”
Authorized under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the lease sale aligns with efforts to promote geothermal development on federal lands. Revenue generated is shared with Utah and its counties, supporting local infrastructure and community services.
All leases include standard BLM protections for natural and cultural resources, such as sensitive wildlife habitats and recreational areas. Successful bidders must complete additional environmental assessments before starting exploration or development, ensuring responsible resource use.
