Lloyd’s Register, Pusan National University to Advance Liquefied Hydrogen Carrier Technology

Lloyd’s Register (LR), a UK-based classification society, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Hydrogen Ship Technology Center at Pusan National University (PNU) in Korea to advance liquefied hydrogen carrier technology and cryogenic engineering. The agreement aims to foster collaboration in joint research, technology development, technical expertise exchange, international academic cooperation, and shared policy initiatives.

The partnership focuses on accelerating the commercialization of liquefied hydrogen carriers, ensuring they meet high international standards for safety and performance. LR emphasized that the collaboration supports the development of innovative solutions for the global hydrogen economy, particularly in maritime applications.

PNU plays a significant role in this effort through its involvement in the Hydro Ocean K project, described as the world’s largest liquefied hydrogen carrier currently under development. The university’s expertise in cryogenic technology strengthens the joint initiative to address technical challenges in hydrogen transport.

Sung-Gu Park, President – North East Asia, Lloyd’s Register, highlighted the importance of the agreement: “We have taken an important first step towards the development of liquefied hydrogen carriers and cryogenic engineering technology. This agreement will serve as a significant turning point, allowing us to advance in the key areas of the future hydrogen economy through differentiated international exchange activities based on world-class cryogenic technology.”

Jae-Myung Lee, Director of the Hydrogen Ship Technology Center at PNU, echoed this sentiment: “The collaboration between our university and Lloyd’s Register is a differentiated international exchange activity based on world-class ultra-low temperature technology. It will be an important turning point for further advancement in the utilisation of liquid hydrogen, a key field in the future hydrogen economy. We will make joint efforts to create synergies in the development of ultra-low temperature research, an unexplored field for human society.”

In a separate development, LR partnered with Queensland-based Seatransport and Houston-based Deployable Energy to explore nuclear power generation for maritime applications. Claudene Sharp-Patel, LR’s Global Technical Director, emphasized the potential of nuclear technology: “It possesses tremendous potential, citing it as a safe, insurable and scalable solution for shipping.”

The collaboration between LR and PNU underscores a commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions for the maritime sector. By combining expertise in cryogenic engineering and hydrogen carrier technology, the partnership aims to contribute to the global transition toward cleaner energy sources, supporting innovation and safety in hydrogen transportation.

This initiative aligns with growing global demand for sustainable maritime technologies, positioning LR and PNU as key contributors to the development of liquefied hydrogen carriers. Their joint efforts are expected to drive progress in research, safety standards, and practical applications for the hydrogen economy.
