Lorena Patterson, CEO and President of WaterPower Canada, stated: “Canadians are sending a clear message: they want more investment in hydropower. Hydro is already doing the heavy lifting – when it comes to delivering clean, reliable, and affordable electricity. These findings confirm that Canadians overwhelmingly support expanding hydro’s role in our energy mix.”
The survey identified key factors influencing energy preferences. Cost was the top concern for 36% of respondents, followed by economic benefits at 24%, and environmental impact at 20%. Younger Canadians emphasized environmental considerations, while older respondents prioritized energy security within the country.
Patterson noted: “Canadians are clear about their priorities. With price being the most important consideration, hydropower stands out as a dependable and cost-effective option to meet our growing energy needs.”
Support for hydropower spans diverse demographics and political affiliations. Overall, 91% of Canadians back the development of hydropower infrastructure. Among Conservative Party supporters, 31% strongly endorse hydropower, with 41% prioritizing affordability and 27% valuing economic advantages. Liberal Party voters show 35% strong support, with preferences for cost (33%), reliability (24%), environmental impact (22%), and economic benefits (21%). NDP supporters demonstrate 30% strong approval, with 31% citing cost and 28% focusing on environmental benefits.
Despite varying priorities, the poll underscores hydropower’s broad appeal due to its affordability, reliability, and economic contributions. Patterson emphasized: “With Canada’s electricity demand set to double by 2050, expanding our clean power capacity is critical. Hydropower is a made-in-Canada solution that enjoys broad public backing – now is the time to build on that support to meet both energy and climate goals.”
The findings indicate strong public consensus for advancing hydropower to address rising energy demands while supporting economic and environmental objectives. This widespread support reflects confidence in hydropower’s role in delivering sustainable and affordable energy across Canada.
