The initiative will enhance Ericsson’s Intelligent Automation Platform (EIAP) and develop rApps, specialized applications that automate radio access network management. These advancements are designed to help communications service providers (CSPs) improve operational efficiency and accelerate the global deployment of 5G networks. By integrating artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and advanced analytics, the project will optimize network performance and reduce operational costs.
Denis Dullea, head of Ericsson’s Athlone site and network management engineering unit, stated: “Ericsson has a long history and deep roots in Ireland spanning more than 50 years. This EUR 200 million investment, supported by the IDA and Irish government, is a testament to our commitment to Ireland and confidence in our exceptional talent here. By delivering on this cutting-edge project, we’re both investing in Ireland’s future and empowering mobile operators worldwide.”
The investment reinforces Athlone’s role as a key hub for Ericsson’s global operations. The project is expected to leverage local expertise to develop innovative solutions that enhance the telecommunications industry’s ability to meet growing connectivity demands.
Ireland’s Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Peter Burke, commented: “Ericsson have been established in Ireland for decades, with the Athlone facility a significant employer and an integral part of the fabric of the community for over 50 years. It is really encouraging that Ericsson have once again cemented Athlone as key base for the company, selecting the campus and the staff based here to lead this pioneering work.”
The Athlone facility’s focus on AI-driven automation and 5G network optimization positions Ericsson to deliver scalable, efficient solutions for CSPs worldwide. The investment is anticipated to strengthen Ireland’s reputation as a center for technological innovation, fostering economic growth and job opportunities in the region.
By advancing its EIAP and rApps, Ericsson aims to set new standards in network management, enabling faster and more reliable 5G rollouts. This strategic investment underscores the company’s commitment to driving technological progress while supporting sustainable development in Ireland’s telecommunications sector.
