The broader initiative will include additional hydropower and pumped storage projects, which will be identified and developed in phases.
Under the MOU, DGPC will hold a 51% majority stake in the projects, while Adani Group will own the remaining 49%. The initiative encompasses additional hydropower and pumped storage projects, which will be identified and implemented in phases to enhance Bhutan’s renewable energy capacity.
DGPC Managing Director Dasho Chhewang Rinzin stated: “This strategic partnership with Adani will further strengthen our very strong engagement with the Government of India in harnessing Bhutan’s abundant hydropower resources, which is considered as the cornerstone of the exemplary and friendly relations between our two countries.”
The collaboration aligns with Bhutan’s Renewable Energy Roadmap, targeting an additional 20 gigawatts of generation capacity by 2040. This plan emphasizes diversification into solar and geothermal energy while fostering partnerships to attract investment and innovation. Adani Group will support reliable power distribution and integration with India’s commercial energy markets, facilitating cross-border energy exchange.
Adani Green Hydro COO (PSP & Hydro) Naresh Telgu said: “This partnership reflects our deep commitment to developing clean energy infrastructure that enhances regional energy security. Together with DGPC, we are enabling Bhutan to harness its hydropower potential and export reliable green energy to India. This is a powerful example of cross-border collaboration in pursuit of shared sustainable development goals.”
In a separate development, Adani Power recently secured a 25-year contract to supply 1.5 gigawatts of electricity to Uttar Pradesh, India. The agreement, awarded through competitive bidding, involves power from a new 1.6-gigawatt thermal power project, further demonstrating Adani’s role in regional energy initiatives.
This partnership between Adani Group and DGPC underscores a commitment to sustainable energy development, leveraging Bhutan’s hydropower resources to meet regional energy demands while supporting long-term environmental goals.
