The airport near Riyadh is expected to be the world’s biggest when it opens in the coming decade
The KSIA project aims to create the world’s largest airport, capable of handling 185 million passengers and 3.5 million tons of cargo annually by 2050. Featuring six parallel runways, the airport will include a terminal for commercial airlines, Terminal 6 for low-cost carriers, and a private aviation terminal with hangars. These facilities will replace all existing terminals at King Khalid International Airport, enhancing efficiency and passenger experience. Bechtel’s responsibilities encompass project management, design oversight, and construction coordination to ensure seamless development.
Darren Mort, President of Bechtel’s Infrastructure Business, stated: “The King Salman International Airport is a landmark project that will reshape Riyadh and enhance the lives and communities it serves.” His remarks highlight the project’s potential to elevate Riyadh’s status as a global aviation hub while fostering economic growth through improved connectivity.
Spanning 57 square kilometers, KSIA will incorporate 12 square kilometers of support facilities, residential and recreational areas, retail spaces, and logistics infrastructure. The terminals are designed to achieve LEED Platinum certification, emphasizing sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact. Bechtel’s expertise, drawn from over 300 projects in Saudi Arabia, including the recently completed Riyadh Metro, ensures the project aligns with the country’s vision for modern, eco-friendly infrastructure.
The KSIA initiative supports Saudi Arabia’s goal of becoming a leading global aviation hub, boosting tourism, trade, and regional development. Bechtel’s involvement leverages its global experience with major aviation projects, such as Hamad International Airport in Qatar and Dubai International Airport in the UAE, to deliver a world-class facility that prioritizes passenger comfort and operational efficiency.
This collaboration strengthens ties between the U.S. and Saudi Arabia in infrastructure development. By overseeing the construction of these advanced terminals, Bechtel aims to create a landmark airport that drives economic prosperity and enhances Riyadh’s global connectivity for decades to come.
