Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced on social media: “The contract for the completion of Dukovany has just been signed. One of the largest projects in the modern history of the Czech Republic aims to ensure the energy security and self-sufficiency of the Czech Republic - for today’s and future generations.” He highlighted that Czech companies will undertake approximately 60% of the construction work, with 30% of contracts already secured. Fiala added that the new units will generate electricity at less than 90 euros per megawatt hour, offering a cost advantage compared to similar projects in Poland and the UK.
The Supreme Administrative Court explained its ruling in a press release, stating: “The Supreme Administrative Court granted the cassation appeals of the companies Elektrárna Dukovany II and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), annulled the contested resolution ordering a preliminary injunction and returned the case to the regional court for further proceedings.” The court found the injunction, initiated by French company EDF, to be unlawful, prioritizing the public interest in advancing the contract.
KHNP responded, stating: “This decision reaffirms the integrity and transparency of the Czech Republic’s tender process and clears the way for the timely advancement of this strategically important project. KHNP remains fully committed to working closely with the project owner, Czech government, and our Czech partners to deliver the new nuclear power plant which will contribute to the Czech Republic’s energy security and decarbonisation goals.”
The Dukovany project follows a competitive tender process, with KHNP selected as the preferred bidder for a contract valued at approximately CZK200 billion (USD8.6 billion) per unit for two units. The initiative supports the Czech Republic’s goal to expand its nuclear capacity, which currently provides about one-third of its electricity through four VVER-440 units at Dukovany and two VVER-1000 units at Temelín. A regional court hearing on EDF’s challenge to the tender process is scheduled, but the contract signing marks a key milestone for the project’s progress.
