Energy Transfer signed an incremental agreement with Chevron for additional volumes of 1 MMtpa from the planned Lake Charles LNG.
Freeman Shaheen, president of Chevron Global Gas, stated: “This expanded LNG agreement reflects the growing strength of Chevron’s global gas business.” Tom Mason, president of Energy Transfer LNG, added: “This agreement marks a significant milestone in our growing partnership with Chevron and underscores the increasing global demand for reliable, long-term LNG supply. With Energy Transfer’s strategic infrastructure and connectivity to key production basins, Lake Charles LNG is poised to be a premier export facility, providing long-term value to our partners and the industry.”
The purchase price includes a fixed liquefaction charge and a gas supply component tied to the Henry Hub benchmark. The Lake Charles LNG project, with a planned export capacity of 16.45 MMtpa, will convert an existing regasification site into an export facility. Other partners include MidOcean Energy, with a heads of agreement for 5 MMtpa, and Kyushu Electric Power Co., with a 1 MMtpa offtake.
Energy Transfer has secured all necessary authorizations from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. In September 2024, the company awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction contract to a joint venture of KBR Inc. and Technip Energies NV. However, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) previously denied an extension to the project’s 2025 export start deadline. On February 25, 2025, Energy Transfer reapplied for an export authorization extension to 2031. On April 17, 2025, the company filed another application to extend the deadline, which is currently under public comment until July 2, 2025.
In April 2025, the DOE announced it would review extension requests on a case-by-case basis, removing previous restrictions requiring projects to be under construction or to prove delays beyond their control. This change supports the project’s progress, aligning with the DOE’s extensive permitting process.
