The Luleå steel mill will feature two electric arc furnaces, secondary metallurgy, and a direct strip rolling mill. Spanning approximately 40 hectares, with a 15-hectare building complex, the facility is expected to begin operations by the end of 2029.
“The new steel mill in Luleå will play a key role in the transformation of our Nordic production system. The mill will be world-class in terms of technology, which will provide us with increased flexibility and an improved cost position,” said Carl Orrling, SSAB’s CTO and transformation office head. He added that the project is anticipated to reduce Sweden’s carbon emissions by 7%.
Since 2024, NCC has been constructing a fossil-free steel production facility for SSAB in Oxelösund, expected to cut Sweden’s carbon emissions by 3%. The Luleå project, managed under NCC’s Green Industry Transformation business area, will progress in phases, with construction tasks assigned as the project advances.
NCC is also involved in developing Svenska kraftnät’s new head office in Solna Business Park, Sweden. Covering 52,000 square meters, the project is part of the Återhus initiative, which emphasizes material reuse and aims for a Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method Excellent rating. Work began in the first quarter of 2025, starting with the dismantling of existing structures for recycling. NCC Property Development oversees the project, while NCC Building Sweden handles construction. The property, named Yrket 4, was sold to KPA Pension, part of the Folksam Group, for SEK 3.6 billion ($378.4 million), with ownership transfer planned for completion in the second quarter of 2028.
Additionally, NCC recently secured a contract from Kåpan Fastigheter to build a new police station for the Swedish Police Authority in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. These projects highlight NCC’s role in supporting sustainable infrastructure and industrial advancements in Sweden.
The SSAB-NCC partnership underscores a commitment to innovative, sustainable steel production, contributing to environmental goals while enhancing Sweden’s industrial capabilities.
