Portage Solar is expected to generate more than $73m in direct economic benefits during its first two decades
The Portage Solar project is projected to deliver substantial economic benefits, estimated at over $73 million during its first 20 years. These benefits include new tax revenue, job creation, increased local spending, and charitable contributions. The project is expected to generate $24 million in tax revenue for Portage County and its townships. Combined with the Apple River project, the two initiatives will contribute more than $100 million in direct economic impact to Wisconsin.
In October 2024, Geronimo Power secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Microsoft for the Portage Solar project, ensuring a stable market for its energy output. Joe Ibrahim, Geronimo Power’s construction vice-president, emphasized the broader impact of the project, stating: “The true value of renewable energy isn’t in the power it provides to the local grid. It’s about the immensely positive impact on local economies in the form of new revenue streams and job creation. We anticipate the addition of Portage Solar to our Wisconsin portfolio will contribute more than $100m statewide – that’s a huge milestone for us and a big win for our project communities.”
The project is being developed in collaboration with Burns & McDonnell, an engineering, procurement, and construction firm. Leslie M. Duke, chair and CEO of Burns & McDonnell, highlighted the growing demand for renewable energy, saying: “As demand for data centres continues to grow, so does the need for reliable, renewable energy. We are proud to support Geronimo Power in the build-out of the Portage site. Together with local union halls and contractors, we are supporting the workforce and strengthening the community as we build.”
The construction of Portage Solar is expected to create approximately 300 jobs, prioritizing local Wisconsin labor. Additionally, Geronimo Power has pledged $1.25 million to support local charities and organizations over the project’s first 20 years through a dedicated charitable fund, reinforcing its commitment to community development.
The Portage Solar project underscores Wisconsin’s growing role in renewable energy, contributing to both economic growth and sustainable energy goals while fostering local employment and community support.
