The 5G SA network, the first of its kind in Costa Rica and Central America, operates independently of 4G infrastructure, leveraging Ericsson’s dual-mode 5G Core solution. This fully native 5G network supports the growing demand for Internet of Things (IoT) devices, improves mobile broadband with faster speeds and lower latency, and ensures reliable connections for both consumers and businesses. The network also enables faster Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services, providing high-speed internet to areas with limited fiber or cable infrastructure.
The project includes deploying over 1,400 sites across Costa Rica, connecting more than 3.7 million subscribers to advanced mobile and internet services. Ericsson’s radio access network (RAN) solutions include equipment such as the Massive MIMO TDD radio AIR 3255, millimeter wave AIR 5322, and single-band Radio 4432, operating in the 700MHz, 3.5GHz, and 26GHz frequency bands. These, along with baseband processors, antennas, and energy-efficient site enclosures, ensure nationwide coverage, high data speeds, and reduced energy consumption. The dual-mode 5G Core, built on Ericsson’s Cloud Native Infrastructure, supports new applications, enhances user experiences, and offers advanced automation.
Guillermo Ponce, Senior Vice President for Liberty Latin America’s Central and South American markets, stated: “This milestone represents a significant advance for the company’s markets by developing Liberty Latin America’s first 5G SA network. In this way, we reinforce our commitment to offer Costa Ricans the best experience with state-of-the-art technology, which will change the way people navigate and boost economic growth thanks to the development of new technological solutions in different industries, hand in hand with 5G SA.”
Sean Cryan, Head of LATAM North and Caribbean at Ericsson, emphasized the importance of security, saying: “As 5G becomes vital for digital transformation, robust security is essential. Our comprehensive approach—from standardization and product development to deployment and operations—ensures networks are safe and reliable. The deployment of the 5G SA network in Costa Rica marks a significant step forward, enabling enhanced user experiences and driving economic growth and innovation.”
The collaboration between Liberty and Ericsson spans planning, deployment, testing, and post-deployment support, fostering innovation and economic growth in Costa Rica through advanced, secure connectivity.
