Negotiation signing for the RABSUL II project in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Situated on the Zambezi River, the 2,075-megawatt Cahora Bassa plant, operational since 1975, provides over half of Mozambique’s electricity and supports energy exports to neighboring countries. The HCB REABSUL II project aims to enhance the facility’s efficiency, reliability, availability, and maintainability, increasing each turbine’s capacity to 433 megawatts.
Andritz’s responsibilities include supplying five 480 megavolt-amperes (MVA) generators, new Francis turbine runners, control and protection systems, and key hydromechanical components. The contract covers design, engineering, manufacturing, and delivery of advanced equipment, followed by installation, testing, and commissioning at the site.
The project will begin with three years of preparatory work, including equipment design, production, and site infrastructure improvements. The replacement of generating units will be carefully managed to ensure uninterrupted operation of the remaining units, in coordination with the rehabilitation of the Songo converter substation, handled by HCB.
These upgrades will reinforce Cahora Bassa’s role as a vital energy source for Mozambique and the region, ensuring a stable and enhanced electricity supply.
