BlueNewables, recognized for its expertise in the blue economy, will provide critical support in navigating the regulatory processes for the wave energy initiative. Wavepiston announced: “BlueNewables is an experienced engineering consultancy at the cutting edge of innovation within the blue economy. They will support Wavepiston in the process of achieving site permissions and permits. The work is planned to commence in September.” This collaboration builds on Wavepiston’s ongoing efforts to harness wave energy for sustainable electricity and desalination, contributing to clean energy solutions without affecting import or export dynamics.
The project aligns with Wavepiston’s prior advancements in Gran Canaria, where, in June 2024, the company completed the installation of a full-scale energy collector on its wave energy system at the PLOCAN test site. This milestone followed earlier deployments, including a full-scale energy collector installed in February 2024, demonstrating the technology’s potential to stakeholders. Wavepiston’s system uses energy collectors to produce pressurized seawater, which is transported to shore for power generation and desalination, offering both clean electricity and fresh water.
BlueNewables brings additional expertise, having achieved progress in its PV-BOS floating solar project in June, marking significant steps toward offshore renewable energy deployment. The collaboration leverages BlueNewables’ experience to ensure the Gran Canaria project meets regulatory requirements efficiently, with permitting work set to begin in September.
Wavepiston’s technology, designed for scalability and low maintenance, aims to provide cost-effective renewable energy solutions, particularly for islands and coastal communities. The Gran Canaria project is part of Wavepiston’s broader strategy to commercialize wave energy, supported by previous funding and testing phases, including a €4.4 million raise through the EU BlueInvest program. The partnership with BlueNewables strengthens Wavepiston’s efforts to advance sustainable energy production, contributing to global renewable energy goals while fostering local economic benefits through innovative marine energy solutions.
