Completion is set for early 2027.
The nine-storey building, designed by Architectus, will provide 445 beds across a mix of studios, twin rooms, and six-bed shared apartments. Each unit will feature kitchen and bathroom facilities, complemented by shared lounges, outdoor terraces, laundry rooms, and dining areas. The development also incorporates indoor and outdoor communal areas, designed to foster student interaction, as well as spaces dedicated to university support services.
Newcastle Member of Parliament Sharon Claydon attended the ceremony and said: “High-quality student accommodation is essential to attracting and supporting students from across Australia and the world. This development means students can live close to campus, close to work, and close to all that Newcastle has to offer.”
University of Newcastle vice-chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky, AO emphasized the project’s importance, stating: “Our new student accommodation will provide a lively, comfortable and supportive home away from home for both domestic and international students in the heart of Newcastle. As the university celebrates 60 years, the City Campus Student Accommodation is the next phase of our Honeysuckle site development and represents our ongoing commitment to improving the student experience.”
The construction is being carried out by Hansen Yuncken, a company with extensive experience in large-scale building projects. The facility is scheduled for completion in early 2027. Once finished, it will serve as a modern residential option for students, providing access to a wide range of amenities designed to support both study and daily life.
In June 2025, the New South Wales Government granted formal approval to the University of Newcastle to proceed with the development. This approval marked an important milestone, allowing construction to move forward on schedule.
The City Campus Student Accommodation aligns with the university’s broader vision of strengthening its Honeysuckle site. The addition of this residential building is expected to complement existing academic and research facilities, while contributing to the vibrancy of Newcastle’s city center.
By offering modern, well-equipped living spaces, the project seeks to address growing demand for student housing, both locally and internationally. It also underscores the university’s long-term strategy of enhancing the overall student experience through improved facilities, convenient locations, and strong community engagement.
With construction underway, the City Campus Student Accommodation stands as a key development for the University of Newcastle’s future, aiming to provide students with not only a place to live but also an environment that supports learning, wellbeing, and connection.
