The collaboration seeks to deliver secure, resilient, and high-performance networks to defense organizations and allied nations. A central goal is to simplify the deployment of 5G in tactical environments, ensuring reliable and interoperable battlefield communications. The two companies will also explore wider applications, including tactical 5G features, integration with unmanned platforms and sensors, and joint participation in European Defense Fund programs such as 5G COMPAD and the Federated Advanced Cyber Physical Test Range (FACT) initiative.
Looking ahead, the cooperation will examine the potential of emerging technologies, including Nokia’s 6G “network as a sensor” concept, also known as Integrated Sensing and Communication. This technology aims to enhance situational awareness and operational readiness by combining communication and sensing functions into a unified system.
Kjetil R. Myhra, Executive Vice President of Defence Systems at Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace, said: “By combining KONGSBERG’s tactical communication assets with Nokia’s leadership in industry-standard technologies, we can speed up the use of civilian telecom solutions in defense. Together, we’ll explore how 5G and 6G can support the developing connectivity requirements in tactical systems, from secure voice and real-time data to unmanned systems and advanced sensors.”
Giuseppe Targia, Head of Space and Defense at Nokia, added: “Many of our products in Nokia are inherently dual-use, serving both commercial and military needs. This collaboration with KONGSBERG underscores our commitment to providing advanced, secure, and fast 5G mobile networks and integrating Nokia’s Banshee radio portfolio to strengthen operations capabilities for a range of tactical scenarios.”
The MoU highlights how partnerships between technology providers and defense specialists can accelerate the adaptation of commercial telecom solutions to meet military requirements. With defense organizations facing increasing demands for robust connectivity, the integration of 5G and future 6G solutions is expected to play an essential role in supporting secure communications, data sharing, and interoperability across diverse mission environments.
By leveraging their combined strengths, Nokia and KONGSBERG aim to advance digital transformation in the defense sector, positioning tactical communication systems to adapt to evolving requirements and emerging technologies.
