Vice Minister of Economic Affairs Lai Chien-Hsin opened the conference, emphasizing Taiwan’s commitment to sustainable energy and carbon reduction. He stated: “Promoting renewable energy is critical to achieving these goals.” Highlighting Taiwan’s favorable geological conditions, Lai noted that six geothermal power plants are operational, with more expected to connect to the grid in 2025, reinforcing geothermal energy’s role in the nation’s energy transition.
The conference covered topics such as Taiwan’s geothermal development, global industry trends, innovative technologies, and local government roles in advancing geothermal projects. The Energy Administration and the Geological Survey and Mining Management Agency presented Taiwan’s policies and exploration progress, while CPC Corporation and Taiwan Power Company shared strategies and recent technological advancements, attracting investment interest from local and international firms.
Afternoon sessions explored project management and international drilling experiences, focusing on leveraging advanced technologies to support local developers, accelerate plant construction, and enhance industry competitiveness. A high-level dialogue, moderated by Acting Director-General of the Energy Administration Lee Chun-Li, concluded the first day. The discussion, titled “The Future Outlook for Geothermal Power in Taiwan,” included global industry and research representatives and focused on attracting investment, expanding the geothermal value chain, and strengthening Taiwan’s position in the green energy market.
On April 25, the conference hosted three workshops on geothermal drilling technology, development solutions, and exploration equipment applications. A technical site visit to CPC Corporation’s Yuanshan No.1 Well, Taiwan’s first deep geothermal exploratory well, allowed international guests to observe progress. Developed with Academia Sinica and drilled to 1,820 meters, the well showcases Taiwan’s geothermal potential and supportive development environment.
The event fostered global collaboration, encouraging partnerships between international and Taiwanese companies to advance geothermal innovation and support Taiwan’s net-zero emission goals. By showcasing its progress and potential, Taiwan aims to expand its geothermal sector and contribute to sustainable energy development worldwide.
