Mainland travelers significantly contributed to this surge, with over 6.9 million crossings, up 22 percent from 2024. High-traffic periods, such as weekends and holidays, saw substantial activity, with a peak of 128,000 crossings on May 2. Streamlined customs clearance procedures have facilitated smoother travel, encouraging more Macao residents to live, work, and establish businesses in Hengqin.
Cross-border trips by Hong Kong and Macao residents totaled over 2.77 million this year, a 60 percent rise from the previous year. “With increasingly convenient customs clearance procedures, more Macao residents are choosing to live, work and start businesses in Hengqin,” noted a spokesperson from the Hengqin immigration inspection station, highlighting the growing integration between the regions.
China’s expanded visa-free travel policies, alongside initiatives like the Hengqin-Macao tour group program and multiple-entry permits, have further eased cross-border movement. These measures have also attracted more international visitors, with foreign travelers exceeding 130,000 at Hengqin Port in 2025, a 73 percent increase from 2024.
The port’s efficient operations and enhanced travel policies continue to support the rising demand for cross-border travel, fostering closer ties between Zhuhai, Macao, and Hong Kong while accommodating a diverse range of travelers.
