According to Grenergy, this agreement represents the largest cooperation to date between the two companies and further strengthens their strategic partnership. It also establishes a new record as the largest battery supply project in Latin America and the second largest globally.
Under the terms of the agreement, BYD Energy Storage will provide a total of 6,240 units of its MC Cube-T model, equivalent to 624 containers. These units will form the basis of the energy storage system for the Elena plant. This facility, part of the broader Oasis de Atacama project, will feature 446 MW of solar generation capacity combined with 3.5 GWh of battery storage.
The MC Cube-T units incorporate BYD’s Blade Battery technology, known for its safety, durability, and operational efficiency—key features for a project of this scale and complexity, Grenergy noted.
The sixth phase builds on the foundation laid by the first three phases of the Oasis de Atacama development, which together reached 3 GWh of storage. With this new addition, the total contracted energy storage volume between Grenergy and BYD now stands at 6.5 GWh.
Grenergy highlighted the importance of the Elena phase as a central component in one of the most significant solar-plus-storage projects worldwide. The integration of large-scale battery systems is expected to support grid stability, increase renewable energy penetration, and enhance energy availability in the region.
This collaboration is part of Grenergy’s long-term strategy to lead in clean energy infrastructure, especially in markets with strong solar resources like northern Chile. The company continues to scale up its renewable energy portfolio, aiming to contribute to more resilient and sustainable energy systems across Latin America.
The partnership with BYD also reflects the growing role of advanced battery technologies in global energy transitions. With projects like Elena, large-capacity energy storage is becoming a critical element in ensuring the reliability and efficiency of solar energy developments.
