The initiative, approved by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) in January 2025, is expected to be operational by the first half of 2026. The hybrid BESS will enhance the region’s energy infrastructure by storing excess power from renewable sources, ensuring a stable supply during peak demand periods. This development aligns with the growing need for energy storage to support the integration of variable renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind.
The Philippine Department of Energy forecasts that variable renewable energy will account for up to 28% of the country’s energy mix by 2031. The BESS project will play a critical role in managing fluctuations in power generation, enabling greater adoption of clean energy and supporting grid reliability. By storing energy efficiently, the system will help balance supply and demand, contributing to a more sustainable energy ecosystem.
Aboitiz Power’s spokesperson stated: “This hybrid BESS was one of the projects approved by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) in January 2025.” The project underscores the company’s commitment to advancing renewable energy infrastructure and supporting the Philippines’ transition to a cleaner energy future.
The Mactan Economic Zone, a hub for industrial and commercial activities, will benefit from the project’s contribution to energy stability and sustainability. The BESS is expected to create economic opportunities, including jobs during construction and operation, while strengthening the region’s capacity to support renewable energy growth. Aboitiz Power’s investment in this technology reflects its focus on innovative solutions to meet the evolving energy needs of the Philippines.
By integrating advanced energy storage, the project will facilitate the country’s shift toward a higher share of renewable energy, reducing reliance on traditional power sources. The initiative positions Aboitiz Power as a leader in the Philippines’ energy sector, fostering sustainable development and enhancing energy security in Central Visayas.
