Bio-LNG, or liquefied biomethane, is produced from purified biogas derived from biomass sources such as animal manure and food waste. Titan’s bio-LNG is certified as carbon-neutral across its entire lifecycle, from production to consumption, and holds ISCC EU certification. This international standard ensures compliance with EU sustainability regulations and traceability throughout the supply chain, supporting environmentally responsible fuel use.
Kaori Takahashi, General Manager of NYK’s Fuel Group, highlighted the initiative’s importance, stating: “We are very pleased to begin the continued use of bio-LNG fuel. Bio-LNG fuel is a highly effective option for decarbonizing the shipping industry, and we will continue actively promoting its use. This initiative will be an important step toward reducing our environmental impact further and achieving a sustainable future.”
Niels den Nijs, CEO of Titan, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, saying: “I would like to express my sincere respect for NYK’s decision to start using bio-LNG fuel. Titan’s mission is to provide solutions to help the shipping industry transition to cleaner fuels. We are very pleased to be able to accelerate our decarbonization efforts together with NYK through this replenishment.”
NYK’s adoption of bio-LNG aligns with its goal to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The use of this sustainable fuel is a key strategy to reduce the environmental impact of its operations, supporting the global shipping industry’s transition to cleaner energy sources. By integrating bio-LNG into its car carrier fleet, NYK aims to enhance the sustainability of its transport services, primarily for domestic and regional markets.
The initiative reflects NYK’s commitment to innovative fuel solutions, contributing to reduced emissions while maintaining efficient maritime operations. This step strengthens the company’s role in promoting sustainable shipping practices and supports broader environmental goals in the industry.
