The project is a collaboration between Bochemie, a Czech chemical producer, GAZ GmbH, a German battery manufacturer, and Second Foundation, an energy trading firm. Together, they are developing an integration line for containerized battery systems, enhancing the region’s capacity to produce sustainable energy storage technologies. The facility builds on Bochemie’s acquisition of GAZ GmbH in 2019 and its spin-off into GAZ Energy in January 2025, marking a strategic expansion within the Bochemie Group.
Miloslav Vodi?ka, Chairman of Bochemie, stated: “This new production line in Bohumín represents a significant step in advancing energy storage solutions. We are committed to leveraging our expertise to deliver reliable and sustainable battery systems for European markets.”
The Bohumín plant is designed to produce lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, ideal for large-scale energy storage due to their cost-effectiveness and durability. The facility is expected to scale production to hundreds of megawatts in 2025, with a potential annual capacity of up to 3 gigawatts by 2027, depending on market demand. Second Foundation’s proprietary software will enhance the batteries’ performance, ensuring efficient energy management for customers.
Stephan Lehrke, head of Second Foundation Germany, noted: “Our collaboration with Bochemie and GAZ Energy allows us to integrate advanced control systems, improving the reliability and efficiency of these battery storage solutions for a wide range of applications.”
The initiative aligns with Europe’s push for sustainable energy infrastructure, supporting applications such as renewable energy storage, grid stabilization, and industrial energy management. The facility will also contribute to local economic growth by creating jobs and fostering innovation in the energy sector.
Bochemie’s long-standing expertise in battery materials, combined with GAZ GmbH’s 135-year history in industrial battery production, positions GAZ Energy as a key player in the European market. The partnership with Second Foundation, which recently acquired a minority stake in the Bochemie Group, further strengthens the project’s potential to meet the region’s energy storage needs.
