Bapanas head Arifa Prastyo Adi announced that the subsidized corn will be sold at 0.37 USD per kilogram, with the government covering the price difference. Adi stated: “The affordable cost of feed will stabilize egg prices and, as a result, keep the cost of chicken meat under control.” He further expressed confidence that the program will secure sustainable egg production by the end of 2025.
The launch of SPHP comes after protests by poultry farmers in the city of Solo, where producers raised concerns over significant increases in the price of corn for feed. Farmers explained that fluctuations were linked to speculation and market manipulation by large traders, which had placed pressure on their production costs. The new initiative is expected to address these challenges by ensuring a steady supply of reasonably priced corn for the sector.
Through this program, Bapanas aims to protect the poultry industry, which plays an essential role in Indonesia’s food supply chain. Corn is a critical component of animal feed, and its rising cost has direct consequences for egg and chicken meat prices. By intervening with a stabilization mechanism, the government intends to balance the market, reduce volatility, and provide relief to both producers and consumers.
The strategy also reflects Indonesia’s broader efforts to safeguard food security and ensure stable prices for basic commodities. Poultry products, including eggs and chicken meat, are important sources of protein for the population, and fluctuations in their prices can impact household expenses. The SPHP program is therefore seen as a step toward maintaining affordability while supporting domestic agricultural production.
The distribution of subsidized corn under SPHP will not only assist farmers in controlling feed costs but also help to align production with consumer demand. The program demonstrates how targeted government measures can support producers while stabilizing prices for essential food items in the marketplace.
As implementation proceeds, the government expects the program to ease tensions in the poultry sector, particularly among small-scale farmers who have been most affected by rising feed costs. By ensuring a reliable supply of corn at controlled prices, Indonesia is working to stabilize the broader food chain and maintain economic balance in a vital sector of its agriculture.
