Electronic grade H2O2 is indispensable for critical cleaning and etching steps in semiconductor chip production. Achieving the required purity level is extremely challenging, with impurities measured in single-digit parts per trillion—equivalent to finding a grain of salt on a soccer field. Only a small number of companies globally have the advanced technology and expertise necessary to meet these demanding specifications.
This development builds on Solvay’s initial launch of electronic grade H2O2 production at the Zhenjiang site in 2018. With the growing need for such ultra-pure materials, driven by continued advances in electronic devices and the semiconductor industry’s adherence to Moore’s Law, the additional capacity ensures reliable supply for next-generation technologies.
Carlos Silveira, President of Solvay’s Peroxides business, emphasized the importance of the project: “This significant capacity increase demonstrates our agility and dedication to customers in the rapidly expanding electronics sector. Thanks to Zhenjiang’s well-established business environment and specialized support, this expansion strategically positions us to continue supplying critical materials for the next generation of technological innovation. Our INTEROX Pico grades offer industry-leading purity and uniformity, supported by identical manufacturing processes across our global production facilities, which is a crucial factor for semiconductor producers seeking worldwide consistency.”
The inauguration event was attended by leaders from the Zhenjiang Economic and Technological Development Zone, Solvay CEO Philippe Kehren, and Carlos Silveira. Their presence highlighted the importance of the investment in strengthening local and global semiconductor supply chains.
Beyond semiconductors, electronic grade H2O2 also plays a role in the production of flat panel displays, photovoltaics, MEMS, and LEDs. The Zhenjiang expansion adds to Solvay’s portfolio of global investments in the United States, Europe, and China, reinforcing its position as a key supplier of high-purity electronic chemicals.
With demand for advanced electronics growing worldwide, the expansion provides strategic advantages for both Solvay and its customers. The company’s ability to offer consistent quality across multiple sites enables semiconductor manufacturers to maintain uniform production standards globally.
By doubling its production capacity in Zhenjiang, Solvay not only enhances its role in the semiconductor value chain but also contributes to the wider development of innovative technologies. The project highlights how critical material supply, combined with advanced manufacturing processes, supports the global electronics industry in meeting rising technological demands.
