The contactless ticketing system builds on a partnership between Telia and Östgötatrafiken that began in 2019, initially introducing smart ticketing for city buses and trams. The latest solution, implemented with Ridango, includes hardware, validation, and payment systems that meet stringent security standards for rail transport. It also provides valuable data to support service planning and improvements.
Ylva Aspenberg, Head of Business Development at Östgötatrafiken, stated: “Telia and Ridango’s solution, which includes hardware and validation and payment systems, meets the high security standards required for use on trains and works very well. It also provides valuable statistics that help us in planning and improving our services. We’re very satisfied, and so are our customers.”
The collaboration aims to further simplify ticket validation and enhance the overall travel experience. By integrating contactless payment options, the system makes public transport more accessible and user-friendly, catering to the needs of modern commuters in Östergötland.
Björn Hansen, Head of Advanced Mobility B2B at Telia Sweden, said: “We’re proud to contribute to smoother and safer public transport experiences for commuters in Östergötland. Thanks to our innovative technology and strong partnerships with Östgötatrafiken and Ridango, we’re working to make travelling simpler, more secure and accessible for everybody.”
Beyond this project, Telia is exploring additional innovations in the rail sector, including participation in tests of a European 5G-based standard to improve critical rail communications. These efforts reflect a commitment to advancing public transport infrastructure through technology.
The contactless ticketing initiative in Östergötland sets a precedent for modernizing fare systems across Sweden. By leveraging secure, efficient technology, Telia and Östgötatrafiken are improving service reliability and customer satisfaction. The partnership will continue to explore ways to streamline operations and enhance connectivity, supporting the region’s public transport network and its passengers.
