The Dagang refinery processes 5 million tonnes of crude annually, yielding 1.5 million tonnes of gasoline. The Ionikylation unit was chosen for its ability to enhance alkylate quality and production efficiency, supporting compliance with National VI gasoline standards while improving environmental and operational safety. The technology enables cleaner production without relying on hazardous catalysts.
Representatives from Well Resources, the global licensor of Ionikylation, recently visited the Dagang refinery to mark the 1,000-day milestone and discuss further process improvements. Since late 2023, the refinery has been testing a next-generation CIL catalyst, reducing catalyst consumption by 35% compared to the original design, enhancing operational efficiency.
Ionikylation technology produces high-octane alkylate free of sulfur, benzene, olefins, and aromatics, using a safe and sustainable process. Unlike traditional methods, it avoids corrosive acid catalysts and additives, relying instead on carbon steel equipment and eliminating the need for specialized containment systems for hazardous materials. In 2020, Ionikylation set an industry benchmark by enabling Sinopec’s Wuhan refinery to convert an existing hydrofluoric acid alkylation unit to this safer, ionic liquid-based system.
The milestone underscores PetroChina’s commitment to advancing refinery operations through innovative technology, ensuring high-quality fuel production while prioritizing safety and sustainability. Ongoing collaboration with Well Resources aims to further optimize the Ionikylation process, supporting the refinery’s long-term efficiency goals.
