Singapore and India have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish the Singapore-India Green and Digital Shipping Corridor (GDSC). The agreement was formalized in New Delhi during an official visit by Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, with the prime ministers of both nations present.

The MoU outlines a joint effort with industry partners to develop infrastructure and technologies that facilitate the maritime sector’s transition to zero or near-zero emission fuels. It also includes plans for digital information sharing and collaborative research into innovative green solutions to promote sustainable maritime practices.
This partnership builds on a letter of intent signed earlier, which focused on advancing maritime digitalization and decarbonization. That initial agreement identified key stakeholders to support these efforts, leading to the formal MoU for the GDSC. The corridor is expected to strengthen initiatives aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing digital connectivity in the maritime industry.
India’s robust renewable energy sector and industrial capabilities enable the production and supply of alternative marine fuels. Singapore, a major global port, contributes its advanced bunkering operations and a growing ecosystem for maritime innovation. Together, the two nations aim to create a framework for environmentally sustainable and technologically advanced shipping solutions.
India has announced significant investments to bolster its domestic shipbuilding industry, with an ambition to rank among the world’s top five shipbuilding nations by 2047. The green and digital shipping corridor with Singapore supports this vision, complementing other planned initiatives, such as a similar corridor with the Netherlands, to advance India’s maritime goals.
The Singapore-India GDSC reflects a shared commitment to sustainability and technological advancement in the maritime sector. By leveraging their respective strengths, both countries seek to contribute to global efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving digital integration in shipping.
Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said: “This MoU marks a significant step in our collaboration with India to drive sustainable maritime solutions and digital innovation, strengthening ties between our nations.”
The partnership is expected to foster innovation and create opportunities for industry stakeholders to collaborate on cutting-edge technologies, positioning Singapore and India as leaders in the global transition to a greener and more connected maritime future.
