Developed under AkzoNobel’s Aerofleet Training+ offering, the programme aligns with SAE International’s AS7489 standard, a global framework for training and qualifying Aerospace Organic Coatings Applicators. Until the introduction of AS7489, no universal benchmark existed for coatings, unlike mechanical or safety disciplines. This programme addresses that gap by providing accessible, high-quality training for the global aerospace sector.
The AS7489 training is structured across five progressive levels, approved by SAE International. It ranges from foundational theory (Level 1) to advanced practical assessments (Levels 2, 3, and 4) evaluating hands-on skills, culminating in Level 5 for specialized expertise. The first cohort of AkzoNobel’s Technical Service Representatives has been certified to deliver this training at the company’s approved training center in Troy, Michigan. Plans are underway to establish additional certified centers across Europe.
Michael Green, business services manager at AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings, stated: “For years, we’ve helped applicators understand and use our coatings effectively, and we will continue to do so but the introduction of the AS7489 programme takes our customer training to a step further. We’re enabling professionals to achieve globally recognised credentials that raise the bar for skill, safety, and quality across the industry, and we’re supporting our customers in the MRO and aftermarket.”
Green added: “We’re supporting meaningful qualifications that raise the standard across the industry. Our digital platform makes professional training measurable, portable, and transparent. Not only will our AS7489 training help individuals advance their careers, and contribute to workforce development, but it will also help businesses attract, retain, and invest in skilled applicators by demonstrating their commitment to recognised professional standards.”
The programme is supported by AkzoNobel’s custom online training platform, enabling applicators, assessors, and employers to track progress and certification status. Participants can submit work, monitor their learning, and store digital credentials, while independent assessors evaluate submissions against AS7489 standards. Employers can oversee employee development and verify candidate qualifications during recruitment.
This initiative enhances workforce skills, supports maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) services, and strengthens competitiveness in the aerospace coatings market. By offering globally recognized credentials, AkzoNobel fosters quality, safety, and professional growth across the industry.
