The JDP establishes a framework for collaboration, emphasizing the use of artificial intelligence, communication technologies, automation, and robotics within HD Hyundai Mipo’s facilities. ABS will apply its ‘Guide for Smart Technologies for Shipyards’ to identify opportunities for process optimization, targeting improvements in hyper-connectivity, advanced automation, and data-driven decision-making.
The project also opens the possibility for ABS to provide certifications, such as product design assessment or manufacturing assessment, contingent on meeting all required standards. These certifications aim to validate the effectiveness and reliability of the implemented technologies.
Christopher J. Wiernicki, ABS Chairman and CEO, stated: “Cutting-edge technologies are revolutionizing shipyard production, pushing boundaries and unlocking new possibilities. Smart features are enhancing health, safety, and quality processes, allowing efficiency and innovation in modern shipbuilding. From augmented and virtual reality to 3D engineering, AI based simulation, digital twins and robotics and automation these advancements are shaping the future of smart ships and smart shipbuilding.”
Hyung Kwang Kim, HMD President and CEO, said: “With this joint development project, we aspire for the digital manufacturing initiative spearheaded by Mipo to receive objective evaluations from certification bodies and establish itself as a global standard. Furthermore, we hope it will act as a force multiplier for shipowners and classification societies resulting in making construction processes more efficient.”
The collaboration aims to set a benchmark for smart shipyard operations by leveraging advanced technologies to streamline production and improve safety and quality. By integrating AI, robotics, and data-driven systems, the JDP seeks to enhance the competitiveness of HMD’s shipbuilding processes while supporting the broader maritime industry’s move toward digitalization.
This initiative reflects a shared commitment to innovation, with ABS and HMD working to create scalable, efficient solutions that could influence global shipyard standards. The project’s focus on smart technology integration positions it to deliver significant operational and environmental benefits for shipbuilding.
