In July 2025, Canada achieved a four-month high in oilseed processing, with 969,000 tons processed. Since the start of the 2024/25 marketing year, the total volume of canola processed reached a record 11.4 million tons, surpassing the 11 million tons recorded in the same period the previous year. Over the past decade, Canada’s canola processing capacity has nearly doubled, rising from 7.36 million tons in the 2014/15 marketing year to the current 11.4 million tons.
A spokesperson from the canola industry stated: “The growth in processing capacity reflects Canada’s commitment to meeting global demand for sustainable oils and related products, supported by significant investments in infrastructure.”
The expansion is driven by increasing demand for canola-based products, particularly in the biofuel sector. However, industry experts highlight uncertainties in the U.S. biofuel market’s regulatory framework, which has been a key factor in the growth of Canada’s canola processing over the past two seasons. These uncertainties could impact the ability to market the additional output from the new capacities.
Canada’s canola industry continues to adapt to global market dynamics while focusing on sustainable production. The planned increase to 15 million tons of processing capacity underscores the country’s efforts to strengthen its position as a leading supplier of canola products, supporting both domestic needs and export markets.
