The Port of Mobile has seen significant growth in container throughput, rising from approximately 502,000 TEUs in 2021 to over 563,000 TEUs in 2023. To accommodate anticipated further increases, the Alabama Port Authority is developing the Montgomery ICTF. The two RTG cranes will be central to container handling operations, enabling efficient transfers between rail and road transport.
Equipped with Active Load Control technology to prevent container sway, the RTGs feature Konecranes Smart Features, including Auto-steering, Auto-positioning, and Auto-TOS Reporting, which integrate with the terminal operating system for precise container placement and streamlined operations. Additional features like Stack Collision Prevention, Auto Path Optimizing, and Auto-Truck Guiding enhance safety and efficiency by guiding road vehicles during container handling.
This order marks the Alabama Port Authority’s first investment in Konecranes RTGs, building on a partnership that began in 2001 with the delivery of a Konecranes Gottwald Mobile Harbour Crane, which continues to handle containerized and breakbulk cargo at the Port of Mobile.
Doug Otto, Interim Director and CEO of the Alabama Port Authority, stated: “The reliability of Konecranes equipment in our operations has encouraged us to expand this partnership. These new cranes will enhance efficiency and handling capacity as we launch the intermodal terminal and scale up our operations.”
Alan Garcia, Director of Regional Sales Americas at Konecranes Port Solutions, said: “This agreement reflects the trust customers place in Konecranes for critical performance and reliability. We are committed to supporting the Alabama Port Authority in this new greenfield development.”
The Montgomery ICTF is expected to support economic growth in Alabama by improving logistics efficiency and creating job opportunities in the region. The adoption of advanced crane technology underscores the port’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure to meet rising demand in global trade. Separately, the Port of Cartagena recently ordered 25 Konecranes RTGs and retrofits for 10 existing units, highlighting the growing global demand for efficient container handling solutions.
